Introduction
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok. By 2005, there were ten countries in the ASEAN - Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Prior to the formation of ASEAN, trade among the member countries was insignificant. After the establishment of ASEAN, the intra-ASEAN trade was estimated to be between 12 to 15 percent of total international trade between 1967 and early 1970.
